Drugs and the
Community |
Return to
Polices
There is a reluctance of both State and Federal governments to
revise our current 'harm minimisation' policy. This policy has
simply not delivered the desired results of the wider
community and Australia now has one of the highest levels of
drug use in the Western world.
Parents who want to keep their children safe are not
succeeding to do so because there is a pro-drug culture that
says:
-
Drugs are a lifestyle choice.
-
Drug use is normal teenage behaviour.
How can parents convince their children that drugs are harmful
when these messages are put out there constantly?
Many people now believe that legalisation is the way to go
because everything else appears to have failed. They say we
have lost the so called 'War on Drugs'. However, instead of
being resigned to defeat Ann is campaigning for a harm
prevention drug policy, which includes both demand and supply
reduction, modelled on that of Sweden which enjoys one of the
lowest levels of drug use in the Western world.
Having successfully ran a drug treatment program, DrugBeat,
for 12 years, Ann brings a wealth of experience to the
Parliament on the processes of drug addiction and what is
required to help a drug abuser to recover. DrugBeat, based in
the northern suburbs is a specialised treatment program that
approaches the physical, emotional and mental aspects of
recovery. To learn more about the DrugBeat of SA program,
